AB is a transversal to parallel lines AD and BC, so the corresponding and alternating angles are congruent and the other pairs are supplementary, adding to 180 degrees.


Here we have A and B are supplementary,


A + B = 180 degrees


(4x - 4) + 116 = 180


4x = 180 - 116 + 4 = 68


x = 68/4 = 17

In this parallelogram, angles A and B add up to 180 (they are supplementary). Set up an equation like this:


4x - 4 + 116 = 180


4x + 112 = 180


4x = 68


x = 17
