Why was it so important for a knight to take vow of loyalty to his Lord?

It's really important for a knight to be able to take a vow of loyalty to his lord because only through such vows were they able to improve themselves either through combat or through social standing over time because they were involved in affairs of manors where they took a vow of alegiance.
