Why did the English want to explore and settle new lands in the 17th century?

It was to address the issue of population growth.  They felt that by establishing colonies they can help ease growing population in England.  Also it was an opportunity where they can find new markets where they can sell their products.  It can also be a way to find more wealth such as gold.
