10 percent of 40 is the same as multiplying 40 by .10 or taking away a decimal place of the 40. 

SO if you decide to multiply it out, you should get left with 4.

It's 4.

You do 40 × 10 (because 10%) and then divide by 100.

(You could also just work it out using common sense because 10% of anything is always the number divided by 10)
