x - y = 2     and       x + y = 33

x - y = 2     solve this equation for x

x - y + y = 2 + y

x  = y + 2   now subsitute the value of x in the other equation

x + y = 33

(y + 2) + y = 33

y + 2 + y = 33

2y + 2 = 33

2y + 2 - 2 = 33 - 2

2y = 31

2y/2 = 31/2

y = 15.5   Now substitute into the original equation

x + y = 33

x + 15.5 = 33

x + 15.5 - 15.5 = 33 - 15.5

x = 17.5

The two numbers that have a difference of 2 and a sum of 33 is 15.5 and 17.5
