The main goal for the US during the Mexican War was to "protect the USA's land, or the recently annexed states of Texas and the surrounding, as well as the USA itself. They started the Mexican-American War, and was able to win, getting most of present southern-western US, and, with the Gadsen Purchase, made the territory what it is today.
