W.H Levis in his book "The Splendid Century" clearly shows that the strict rules of court etiquette at Versailles were fashioned to keep nobles in check. Before Luois XIV the nobility was more powerful and often dictate the terms in court but Luois XIV in order to curb the threat to power introduced the strict court rules for nobles . By keeping the nobility occupied with privileges, favors and ranks the king kept the ambitious nobles at bay.
