They used horses, ships, and trains but I'm not sure which one they used the MOST which is what your question is asking. Although I wouldn't go with train because many people didn't believe that trains would work back in the day, and on top of that, the first rail road was invented in 1869. So if I were to guess which one was the most popular i would go with horses. :)
