The rise of nationalism was one of the most important political phenomena of the 20th century. Nationalism is an ideology that is characterized by the promotion of the interests of a particular nation. Nationalism usually has as its goal self-determination.

In the 20th century, this ideology led to the independence of many nations. However, it also had a role in the rise of fascist governments such as those in Italy and Germany.
