If [tex]x\to0^-[/tex], then we're considering values of [tex]x[/tex] where [tex]x<0[/tex]. When [tex]x[/tex] is negative, we have [tex]|x|=-x[/tex]. So,

[tex]\displaystyle\lim_{x\to0^-}\frac1x-\frac1{|x|}=\lim_{x\to0^-}\frac1x-\frac1x=\lim_{x\to0^-}0=0[/tex]
