The Coriolis effect deflects the winds because they aren't firmly connected to the ground, travel long distances while the Earth is rotating slower at the poles and faster at the Equator. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Coriolis effect tends to deflect winds to the right and in the Southern Hemisphere, it tends to drive winds to the left.
