when you use regrouping to multiply two digit numbers why does the second partial product always end in 0?

The 0 is there just so that the numbers are placed in right order. That helps to avoid messing up when you add your partial products. The 0 is placed at the non existing spot, because it doesn't represent any number, it is used simply as a guide.
