That's -5 • a = -5a

Then you multiply -5 • 3 = -15

Your new equation would be -5a -15 = -55

You add 15 to the -15 and the -55 that would be

-5a = -40

At the end you divide -5a÷ -5 = a

If you do this to one side you have to do it to the other.

-40÷ -5 = 8
