What did the colonists "pledge" in this declaration ?

In the Declaration of Independence, the colonists pledged that the federal government would be given specific rights and control over themselves, which they willingly gave up because they would still have important freedoms like freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and defense, etc. Plus it wasn't any worse than the British government either.
