Macbeth wanted to kill the king because
1. to fulfil the prophesy
2.the be the king and gain power over Scotland
3. to be seen as the "man" in his wife's eyes

The witches have told Macbeth he would be king. But how could he be king if Duncan was king? Kill him.  ( Macbeth killed King Duncan because otherwise, he would not become king himself.)
