4(y+3)+7=3
first you distribute the 4
4y+12+7=3
now add simplify each side
4y+19=3
subtract 19 from each side
4y=(-16)
divide each side by 4
y=(-4)
so -4 is your answer for y

What you need to do is isolate the Y.
First - Distribute the 4 and get:
4y+12+7=3
Second - Combine like terms and get:
4y+19=3
Third - Subtract 16 from both sides and get:
4y = -16
Fourth - Divide by 4 and get:
Y=-16/4

Y = -16/4 = -4
