Huilan's age is two times Thomas's age. The sum of their ages is 36. What is Thomas's age?

x + y = 36
2x = y

x is Thomas's age
y is Huilan's age 

Substitute: x + (2x) = 36
Combine like terms: 3x = 36
Divide both sides: x = 12
Thomas's age is 12.
