The volume of a cube is its side length cubed. Easy to remember, since it's literally "cubed":

[tex]{5cm}^3} = 5cm *5cm*5cm = 125cm^3[/tex]

The [tex]cm[/tex], which is a length unit, becomes cubic centimeters, a volume unit.
