Macromolecules are synthesized into a simple collection of small molecules through the processes of dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis. In the former reaction, energy is invested within the system to create a new covalent bond, while the latter releases energy to break covalent bonds enabling the synthesis of macromolecules.
