In Canto 4 of "The R*pe of the Lock," we meet Umbriel. He is an earthly gnome who decides to fly down to the "Cave of Spleen." As he is descending, he passes Belinda, who it lying in bed with a headache, and extremely upset due to the loss of her lock. Umbriel comes back with a bag of "sighs, sobs and passions" and a vial of "sorrow, grief and tears," which he unleashes on Belinda.
