why does it take three copies of 1/6 to show the same amount as one copy of 1/2?

Because 3/6 is equal the 1/2. 1/2x3=3 and 2x3=6 so 3/6.

So 1/2 = 3 times of 1/6
[tex] \frac{1}{6}[/tex] × 3 = [tex] \frac{1}{2} [/tex]
