Why can it help to line up the decimal points before comparing and ordering numbers with decimals

This is because the value of a number in decimal form depends on their position from the decimal point. Every number that is left of decimal point it will be valued 10 times. If you don't line them up then you cannot compare them because they could have a different value and you will end up messing the calculations.
