Greetings!

"The difference of six times a number and 7 is -49"...

In number and variables, this would be:
[tex]6x-7=-49 [/tex]

Add 7 to both sides.
[tex](6x-7)+7=(-49)+7 [/tex]
Simplify.
[tex]6x=-42[/tex]
Divide both sides by 6.
[tex](6x)/6=(-42)/6[/tex]
Simplify.
[tex]x=-7[/tex]

Hope this helps.
