Napoleon sold Louisiana territory to the U.S because he couldn't hold it. It was far from where Napoleon was and it was being threatened by the Spanish.

because he would have a hard time managing the land and needed the money for war in Europe.
Napoleon first think that he could hold on to the territory and obtained the money he needed for war from the French expeditions. But after receiving the news that The expeditions have failed, he need to sell the territory to fund his wars in Europe.
