Using words, how do you solve for x?
-20 = x + 16

-20 = x + 16.....subtract 16 from both sides
-20 - 16 = x....combine like terms
-36 = x

First, you would subtract sixteen from both sides. After this, you end up with -36=x

and that is your answer!
