Freedom meant independence and end of slavery in post revolutionary Haiti.
The immediate post revolutionary period was very difficult in the country as it was in shambles with most of its plantation destroyed and the overseers gone either dead, or fled for their lives due to the treatment of slaves. This meant the country was completely broke with its base of income destroyed (agriculture).
