Rem sleep refers to a paradoxical sleep. explain this and compare it to non-rem sleep

REM is rapid eye movement. This is called paradoxical sleep because people may look like asleep but the brain is active and brainwaves are identical to wake state. During REM most of the input comes from the brain compared when awake that inputs come from the surroundings.
NREM on the other hand, brainwaves become progressively slower until the deepest stage of sleep. Deep sleep us essential for restoring energy. During NREM, wounds are healed, muscles are restored and growth hormones are released.
