A common feature in Anglo-Saxon poetry is the double metaphor, also known as a KENNING.

It is often a compound of two words with hyphen. 

Example:
sky-candle = sun
winter's blanket = snow
Thor's laughter = thunder
wound-hoe = sword
battle-sweat = blood
Children of battle = soldiers
